Boise doesn't market itself as a supercar city, which is exactly why it's a good one. There's no queue of rental Lamborghinis on the main street, no valet line to perform in, and no traffic worth mentioning. What there is: about a hundred miles of genuinely excellent two-lane road within an hour of downtown, and a shot at actually enjoying it.

What makes Boise different from Vegas or Scottsdale
In Las Vegas and Scottsdale, a large part of the value of an exotic rental is being seen in it. In Boise, the value is the road. The Treasure Valley sits at the edge of mountain country, and within thirty minutes of downtown the terrain changes completely — river canyons, ponderosa forest, switchbacks, elevation.
The practical upside for renters: a smaller, less saturated market means far better availability on short notice, less event-driven price volatility, and a real chance of getting the exact car you asked for on a summer Saturday.
Highway 55: the Payette River Scenic Byway
The one everybody names first, and correctly. Highway 55 leaves from Eagle just outside Boise and runs north along the Payette River through the Boise and Payette National Forests — a 112-mile byway that passes Horseshoe Bend, Banks, Smiths Ferry, Cascade and Lake Cascade before reaching McCall on Payette Lake, ending at New Meadows.
The stretch that matters most for driving is the roughly 35 miles between Horseshoe Bend and Rainbow Bridge, where the highway runs directly alongside one of the country's better whitewater rivers. It's mostly two lanes with occasional passing lanes, tree-lined canyon on both sides, and consistent sightlines.
Driving time to McCall is around two and a half hours each way without stops — so this is a full-day rental, not a 4-hour block. Elk, deer and eagles are common; take the wildlife signage seriously, particularly at dawn and dusk.
Best car for it: something with mid-range punch and comfortable long-distance manners. A Porsche 911 or a McLaren GT is close to ideal. If there's any chance of weather, the Lamborghini Urus or a Brabus G63 G-Wagon covers the same road without any second-guessing.
Highway 21: the Ponderosa Pine Scenic Byway to Idaho City
Shorter, tighter, and closer to home. Idaho 21 climbs northeast out of Boise past Lucky Peak, through pine forest, to the old gold-mining town of Idaho City in about an hour. The road is technical in the good sense — sustained curves, elevation gain, and enough historical markers and pull-offs to break up the run.
Idaho City itself is a genuine 1860s mining town, and there are hot springs nearby if you want to turn the drive into an evening. As a round trip with a stop, it fits comfortably inside a 4-hour rental block.
Best car for it: this is the drive where a sharp, short-wheelbase car earns its keep. A Porsche 911, an Audi R8, or a Lamborghini Huracán EVO Spyder with the roof down on a summer evening.
Bogus Basin Road: the after-work drive
Sixteen miles of switchbacks from the north end of Boise up to the ski area, climbing several thousand feet with the whole Treasure Valley opening up behind you. It is the shortest of these drives and the one locals actually use.
Time it for sunset. From the top, the valley lights come on while you're still above them. The road is narrow, the corners are blind, and it's popular with cyclists in summer — drive it for the view and the rhythm, not for speed.
Best car for it: anything. This is the drive that justifies a 4-hour block on a Tuesday.
US-20 to Sun Valley and Ketchum
The long one, and the one worth planning properly. East on I-84 then US-20 through the high desert toward Fairfield and up to Ketchum and Sun Valley — around three hours each way, opening into wide, fast, empty country with the Sawtooths ahead of you.
This is a full-day minimum and better as an overnight. It's also the most likely of the four drives to exceed a standard daily mileage allowance, so ask about the cap and the overage rate before you commit to it. If you're heading up for a wedding, a Sun Valley event or a ski weekend, that's exactly the trip where a Rolls-Royce Cullinan or a G-Wagon makes more sense than a two-seater.
Best car for it: a luxury SUV, without much debate — Cullinan, Urus, Maybach GLS 600, or a G63.
Seasonal timing in Idaho
Idaho's driving seasons are real, unlike Nevada's:
Late May through September is prime. Long days, dry pavement, roof-down evenings.
October is the best light of the year on Highway 55, with cottonwood and aspen color along the river.
November through March means snow and ice on every one of these routes at elevation. This is when the G-Wagon, Urus and Cullinan stop being style choices and start being the correct answer. Bogus Basin Road in particular can require traction devices.
Spring brings runoff, gravel and pothole repair on the mountain routes. Beautiful, but check road reports.
Beyond the drive
Boise's luxury rental demand isn't only scenic. Wedding season runs heavy from late spring through early fall, and a Rolls-Royce Cullinan at an Idaho Botanical Garden or foothills venue is a different kind of photograph than a town car.
